Pneumococcal disease, caused by a type of bacterium called Streptococcus pneumoniae, is a major cause of infections that may be in the ears, sinuses, blood, lungs, or brain. Researchers are studying an investigational vaccine that may provide protection against pneumococcal disease in adults. This study will test the effectiveness and safety of three different dose strengths of an investigational vaccination compared to an FDA-approved vaccine.
