Chronic spontaneous urticaria (a.k.a. chronic idiopathic urticaria) is the spontaneous occurrence of itchy wheals (hives), swelling, or both lasting for more than 6 weeks. Flare-ups range in size from a few millimeters to a few centimeters across, usually occurring in groups and often grouped to form large lesions. This can cause intense itching and has a major impact on a person’s wellbeing.
